HONOLULU, Hawaii (KHNL/Gray News) - Pearl Harbor survivor "Ike" Schaub is back in Honolulu.

When the 103-year-old man disembarked from his flight from Portland on Sunday, he was greeted with applause.

Sheb was a Navy musician stationed on the USS Dobbin which was anchored at Ford Island.

During the bombardment of Battleship Row, he helped load his ship's anti-aircraft guns.

Asked what was going through his mind, he said, “Disbelief. “I couldn’t believe this was happening.”

Even at her advanced age, Sheb looks forward to attending the annual Pearl Harbor commemoration ceremony to pay her respects along with other survivors.

“There's a certain sense of comfort there but also obligation. It's a nice word,” he said. "I have to give it to them. Just like this." But this year's trip almost did not happen.
